Starting Year 3

Our first raft of seminars to start our third year were completed in September at Selworthy. We are surrounded by beautiful National Trust land and properties which is calming to the soul, and uplifting to the spirit. We get views across to Dunkery and the Horner Wood Nature Reserve, which in the early morning are covered by a gentle mist; but as the sun shines through it glints on the tapestry of green laid out before our eyes…

One of the students exclaimed as we walked to the classroom from the car park, ‘I am so lucky to go to school in a place like this!’ We feel like that too…

We are still getting requests from hopeful students to join even after the term has started, and it depends if they can make up the missed seminars. As we don’t deliver any of our content online, lessons cannot be ‘watched’ at any time, but must be taught face-to-face. It may be that we can make up lost seminars, but it is never easy.

In September the first years spent a day doing Pharmacy, this included theory/solutes/polarity/constituents/ harvesting schedules, it included getting our boots on and going out into the fresh air and picking Hawthorn berries, it included making those berries into a tincture and calculating alcohol strength and herb ratios. The third years were in their Clinical Skills seminar, practising abdominal examination techniques. The next day the first years were immersed in Materia Medica, and the third years spent a day on Herbal Therapeutics and Clinical Medicine.

At lunch time, hungry students and staff demolished a thick and spicy vegetable stew with grain-free bread when we sat down together at lunch time. Yes, we feed you too…
